Project Idea

The best idea I have at the moment is to explore the implications for L2 students in the current genre studies approach to teaching composition. Although a genre studies approach to second language literacy has been around for (I think) 30 years or so, this approach has been focused within English for Specific Purposes, which lays out conventions for academic and workplace settings. Since the most recent adaptation of the genre studies approach to composition involves students exploring genres, rather than having conventions told to them, I doubt that much scholarship has investigated what that means for L2 learners.

My current plan for working on this issue is 1) reviewing what scholarship has explored the intersection of L2 learners and genre studies, 2) understanding the current student-driven, metacognitive application of genre studies, 3) understanding the unique needs of L2 learnesr, and then 4) connecting all of that in order to make some smart comments upon how to adjust the genre studies approach to meet the needs of L2 learners. Whew, that sounds like a tall order for one project! Anyone have suggestions for narrowing the scope?
